Borssele Nuclear Plant Offline for Over Two Weeks Due to Leak Repairs
The Borssele nuclear power plant in Zeeland was offline for over two weeks following a leak in its nuclear section. This incident occurred during a critical period as the plant's operating life extension was recently approved and plans for new nuclear facilities are underway.

The Borssele nuclear power plant was taken offline on June 27 due to a leak, remaining non-operational for over two weeks. Following repairs, an additional pipe replacement was identified, necessitating further work.
The facility has resumed operations after repairs were completed, with no significant safety issues reported. This outage comes as the Tweede Kamer approved an indefinite operating life extension for the 53-year-old plant, which was previously set to close in 2033.
Concurrently, plans for two new nuclear plants are being discussed, with Zeeland expressing interest. Historical data indicate that the Authority for Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection (ANVS) has recorded several reportable events at Borssele, though most have had no significant impact. The life-extension proposal awaits Senate approval amid ongoing site discussions for the new facilities.
