Botetourt County's Planning Commission will evaluate a proposal on March 9 to establish a 5-megawatt solar facility on a 53.4-acre lot in Fincastle, with 33 acres leased by New Leaf Energy. The project intends to operate under a community scale solar energy program, letting residents and businesses subscribe to solar output for utility bill credits.

Synergy Solar estimates the facility could power up to 1,000 homes using around 12,234 panels secured by a seven-foot fence. Supporters advocate for renewable energy, while opponents express concerns regarding environmental impact and property values. The commission meeting will take place at 6 p.m., preceded by a rally at 5 p.m.
