Brazilian Navy Prepares Tupi-Class Submarines Timbira and Tapajó for Future SINKEX Exercise
The Brazilian Navy is preparing two retired Tupi-class submarines, Timbira (S32) and Tapajó (S33), for a upcoming SINKEX exercise. Both submarines are currently moored at the Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro and have been marked for use as targets. Decommissioned in February and August 2023 respectively, these submarines will contribute to realistic naval training, allowing evaluation of weapon systems and tactics against submarine targets. The exercise is set to provide valuable insights into combat scenarios involving underwater vessels.

The Brazilian Navy is preparing the retired Tupi-class submarines Timbira (S32) and Tapajó (S33) for a SINKEX exercise planned for March 8, 2026. Both submarines are currently at the Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro and have been marked with identifiable colors for the exercise.
The Timbira was decommissioned on February 17, 2023, and the Tapajó on August 11, 2023. The SINKEX will involve using operational weapons to sink these vessels, providing a realistic training environment.
The Tupi-class submarines, a subvariant of the German Type 209/1400, were constructed in Brazil, enhancing local shipbuilding capabilities. They feature a diesel-electric propulsion system and a combat system capable of launching torpedoes or mines.
