Byrum took command of the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL) from Brig. Gen. Simon M.
Doran on February 27, 2026, at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Lt. Gen.
Eric E. Austin presided over the ceremony, highlighting MCWL's importance in Marine Corps innovation. Doran commanded the MCWL from April 18, 2024, to February 27, 2026, leading efforts to develop threat-informed concepts and capabilities.
Byrum, acknowledging his new role, committed to supporting the Marine Corps' future objectives. His awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit.
