Brookline Secures $175,000 in State Grants for Energy Efficiency Projects
Brookline has obtained $175,000 in state grants aimed at enhancing energy efficiency in town buildings and assisting renters with energy cost reductions. The funding includes a $125,000 Green Communities grant for six projects and a $50,000 EmPower Massachusetts grant for a renter-focused initiative.

Brookline has received $175,000 in state grants to improve energy efficiency in municipal buildings and aid renters in reducing energy expenses. The larger grant of $125,000 from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources will support six energy projects, including the installation of heat pumps at Brookline High School.
The total cost of these projects is estimated at $444,000, supplemented by $78,000 in utility incentives and $241,000 from town funds. Completion is expected for five projects by October 2026, with the heat-pump installation projected for July 2027.
Additionally, a $50,000 EmPower Massachusetts grant will provide DIY weatherization kits to approximately 100 renters. This initiative aims to address the split incentive problem that often hinders renters from making energy-efficient upgrades. Brookline's Division of Sustainability and Natural Resources will oversee these efforts, which align with the town's Climate Action and Resiliency Plan aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
