NUCLEAR

In a significant development for international nuclear cooperation, Bulgarian Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov and U.S. Secretary of Energy Christopher Wright recently signed a joint statement in Vienna, reaffirming their commitment to the civil nuclear cooperation agreement between their nations. This pivotal moment occurred during the International Atomic Energy Agency's general conference, underscoring the strategic partnership that exists in the realm of nuclear energy.

The newly signed document illustrates a shared dedication to advancing innovative nuclear reactor technologies, which are essential for enhancing Bulgaria's economic security and resilience. The collaboration will see Bulgaria benefit from the expertise of U.S. laboratories as it embarks on a pre-project study to evaluate potential sites for the rapid deployment of small modular reactors. This initiative aims to lay the groundwork for the eventual adoption of such advanced technologies within the country.

In addition, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency has expressed its readiness to finance a review of various small modular reactor technologies, enabling the identification of those best suited to Bulgaria's unique conditions. This support aligns with broader European objectives for energy security and competitiveness, positioning Bulgaria to strengthen its longstanding expertise in the safe operation of nuclear facilities with cutting-edge advancements.

Stankov articulated the importance of this agreement, stating that with U.S. support, Bulgaria can solidify its status as a leader in producing clean, emission-free energy for Southeast Europe. The joint statement not only deepens the already robust cooperation between Bulgaria and the United States but also highlights the strategic importance of this partnership in fostering Bulgaria's leadership in clean energy.

In the coming week, Stankov will join a Bulgarian delegation led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. During this visit, he plans to engage with government and business leaders on matters pertaining to nuclear energy development, further emphasizing the significance of international collaboration in achieving sustainable energy goals.
