California Start-Up SPAN to Test Mini Data Centers in U.S. Homes
SPAN aims to deploy mini data centers in residential areas to address growing AI infrastructure needs. This initiative could reduce costs and environmental impact associated with traditional data centers.

SPAN, a California-based start-up, plans to install mini data centers, or 'nodes', in residential settings. The company is collaborating with a major real estate developer and Nvidia to create units equipped with Nvidia processors and terabytes of memory.
SPAN intends to cover part or all of homeowners' electricity and internet costs to incentivize installations, targeting a pilot of 100 units this year and a broader rollout of 80,000. While these nodes can support streaming and cloud gaming, they won't replace traditional data centers, which remain necessary for training AI models. Challenges include skepticism about scalability, security risks, and acceptance by homeowners' associations.
