Cambodia and Japan Strengthen Bilateral Relations with Strategic Partnerships and Economic Cooperation
Cambodia and Japan are enhancing their bilateral relations, marked by mutual trust and frequent high-level exchanges. During Prime Minister Hun Manet's visit to Japan in May 2025, the two nations emphasized the expansion of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and collaboration in economic, security, and international matters.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's leadership since October 2024 has reinforced this cooperation, aligning with Japan's vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. In 2024, trade volume reached $2.16 billion, with Cambodian exports to Japan at $1.4 billion.
Japan has provided approximately $3 billion in development assistance since 1992, focusing on infrastructure and socio-economic projects. Security cooperation is also growing, highlighted by Japan's donation of patrol boats and commitment to enhance bilateral defense ties. Both countries are committed to strengthening regional cooperation and supporting a rules-based international order.
