Camden Scrap Yard Implements New Fire Suppression System Amid Legal Issues
EMR has installed a $4.5 million fire suppression system at its Camden facility to mitigate fire risks, particularly from lithium-ion batteries. This initiative follows legal scrutiny and aims to enhance safety for the surrounding community.
EMR has launched a new fire suppression system at its Camden recycling facility, investing over $4.5 million to prevent fires, especially from lithium-ion batteries. The system features infrared cameras, water cannons, and a 250,000-gallon water tank, designed to activate when temperatures exceed 225 degrees.
The project, which took approximately seven months to complete, aligns with a memorandum of understanding signed with the city in August 2025, focusing on fire prevention measures. This installation comes in the wake of a lawsuit from New Jersey's Attorney General regarding repeated fires at the site. While some community members are optimistic, others express skepticism about the system's effectiveness and the engagement process with residents.
