Cammell Laird Completes Bow for Royal Navy's HMS Birmingham in Type 26 Frigate Program
Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead has completed the bow for HMS Birmingham, part of the Royal Navy's Type 26 frigate program. This milestone is part of a contract with BAE Systems to deliver eight vessels by the mid-2030s. The bow block steel was cut on August 6, 2024, and consists of 12 units. Work involved over 8,000 hot work items and a workforce exceeding 100 employees at peak times, including apprentices gaining practical experience.

Cammell Laird shipyard has completed the bow for HMS Birmingham, a milestone in the Royal Navy's Type 26 frigate program under contract with BAE Systems. The bow, consisting of 12 units, is part of eight vessels commissioned for service by the mid-2030s.
The bow block steel was cut on August 6, 2024. In addition to the bow, over 8,000 hot work items were fitted and welded. At the peak of construction, more than 100 employees worked on the project, including apprentices gaining experience. Sections are also being built at A&P Tyne and will be assembled at BAE's Govan site in Scotland.
