Canada Begins Construction of Land-Based Test Facility for River-Class Destroyers in Nova Scotia
The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) has commenced construction of a Land-Based Test Facility (LBTF) at Hartlen Point, Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, to support the Royal Canadian Navy's River-class destroyers. Construction, initiated in November 2025 and projected for completion in early 2028, is being carried out by PCL Construction and is expected to create approximately 200 jobs.
Site preparation began in 2023, with work including roadway access, grading, and installation of municipal services. The LBTF is designed to integrate combat systems for the River-class ships, crucial for enhancing the capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in maritime operations. This facility aligns with Canada's commitments to NATO defense spending and reinforces its maritime security initiatives.
