Canada to Spin Off Photonics Facility into Commercial Entity for AI Growth
The Government of Canada plans to transition the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre into a commercial entity to enhance AI hardware capabilities. This initiative aims to attract private investment and expand Canada's role in semiconductor manufacturing, critical for emerging technologies.

The Canadian government is initiating a spinoff of the Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC) into a commercial entity to attract private capital and boost the country's semiconductor capabilities. Established in 2005, the CPFC is one of only three independent compound semiconductor facilities globally and aims to support AI and photonics technology growth.
The planned commercialization follows a commitment in Budget 2025 to enhance the facility's appeal to investors. The spinoff could resolve existing operational constraints and enable the CPFC to expand its service offerings.
There is already interest from firms like Ranovus in acquiring or investing in the facility, indicating a strong market demand. Ensuring Canadian control post-privatization is critical for safeguarding national interests and establishing a sovereign semiconductor supply chain.
