Cannon Air Force Base Completes Removal of 4,565 Gallons of Aqueous Film-Forming Foam
Cannon Air Force Base has removed 4,565 gallons of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) containing PFAS as part of compliance with the Air Force's AFFF Sundown Policy and the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act. The foam was disposed of at Waste Management Kettlemen Landfill in California. The base has also addressed soil contamination from AFFF rinsate and invested over $74 million in PFAS response efforts, including a water treatment facility.

Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico has disposed of 4,565 gallons of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This action follows the Air Force's AFFF Sundown Policy and the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, with the material transported to Waste Management Kettlemen Landfill in California.
The base has also completed the removal of contaminated soil due to improper disposal of AFFF rinsate in July 2024. Cannon AFB has invested over $74 million in PFAS response efforts and treated nearly 140 million gallons of water. A task force was appointed to review environmental compliance training and policies.
