Carbon Farming Sector Growth Prospects in Italy and France
The Mediterranean carbon farming market is expanding, driven by the EU's Carbon Removal Certification Framework. France's Label Bas-Carbone program has recognized 1,685 projects, with potential carbon impact of 6.41 MtCO₂eq by March 2025, while Italy lags with a nascent national carbon credit registry focused on forestry.

The EU's Carbon Removal Certification Framework is pivotal in transforming agricultural credits into regulated assets, facilitating growth in the Mediterranean carbon farming sector. France's Label Bas-Carbone program validated 1,685 projects with an anticipated impact of 6.41 MtCO₂eq by March 2025.
In contrast, Italy established a carbon credit registry in October 2025, primarily covering forestry. The region’s woody crops, including olives and grapevines, have sequestration potential significantly higher than Northern Europe's cereal crops.
Radica, based in Ostuni, is developing data infrastructure, managing over 25,000 hectares, and aims for 1.2 million credits by 2030. The gap between demand for high-integrity agricultural credits and current supply signals a need for structured development, particularly in areas like Lazio.
