Casino Food Company's Biohub Project Targets Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction
Casino Food Company is launching a biohub to convert abattoir waste into energy, aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions significantly. The initiative is expected to enhance energy resilience for local operations amid rising energy costs.

Casino Food Company is initiating a biohub project to convert nutrient-rich wastewater from its abattoir into energy, with an initial 50 megalitre lagoon planned. The first stage will produce methane and carbon dioxide using anaerobic microbes, with gas flaring expected to eliminate 98% of the company's Scope One emissions, equating to 35,000 tonnes annually.
The second stage, set for implementation within two years, aims to utilize this gas for generating power, potentially offsetting 50% of the plant's electricity needs. The project will also incorporate biosolid conversion in future phases, further enhancing energy production capabilities. Notably, the initiative has garnered support from local and federal governments amid increasing energy costs.
