Cassandra Transforms Barn into Sustainable Home in Maryland
Cassandra successfully converted a barn into an energy-efficient home in Maryland despite a nearby housing development. She employed sustainable design principles inspired by architect William McDonough and utilized local materials.
Architect George Holback assisted in drafting the plans. The barn's interior was reconfigured, with a high-ceilinged living room and bedrooms for family. Cassandra insulated the barn with recycled paper and encased lead-painted exteriors instead of stripping them.
Living off the grid, she uses solar power for heating water and energy, with a focus on water conservation, averaging 24 gallons daily. Wastewater is reused in her garden, and she replaces non-native plants with indigenous species. The project promotes biodiversity, attracting wildlife while remaining discreetly hidden from the adjacent housing development.
