Cebu Advocates Push for Renewable Energy Amid Rising Oil Prices
Cebu's energy advocates are urging a shift towards renewable energy to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices on consumers. The call for increased local energy sourcing comes as heavy reliance on fossil fuels makes the region vulnerable to global market fluctuations.

Cebu advocates, led by the Cebu Electricity Rights Advocates (CERA), are pushing for a significant increase in renewable energy in the local supply chain to combat rising oil prices, which have surged from $70 to $110 per barrel. They emphasize that over 80% of the Philippines' energy mix is currently reliant on coal and imported fuels, leaving Cebu exposed to volatile markets.
CERA calls for local utilities, including Visayan Electric Company, Cebu Electric Cooperative, and Mactan Electric Company, to prioritize local renewable sources like solar and geothermal. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines is also urged to expedite interconnections among Cebu, Negros, and Mindanao to access these resources.
Legislative action is recommended to eliminate VAT on electricity to alleviate current financial pressures on consumers. If these measures are not implemented promptly, Cebu's families may face prolonged financial strain due to global fuel crises.
