Centrica and X Energy Advance Plans for Small Modular Reactor Development at Hartlepool Site

NUCLEAR

Centrica and X Energy have marked a significant milestone in the development of small modular reactor (SMR) technology with the signing of a joint development agreement (JDA) aimed at establishing nearly 1 gigawatt of capacity at the Hartlepool nuclear site. This facility, owned by EDF and Centrica, has been designated as the preferred location for a prospective fleet of SMRs, with plans to deploy up to 12 units of the XE 100 design. This initiative could potentially add 960 megawatts of capacity to the UK's energy infrastructure.

The proposed SMR project is strategically situated adjacent to the existing Hartlepool nuclear power station, which is scheduled to cease operations in 2028. With the site already recognized for new nuclear development under government policy, the groundwork is being laid for a robust nuclear future in the UK.

Centrica has committed to providing the initial project capital, with ambitions to launch comprehensive development activities by 2026, pending regulatory approval. Anticipated electricity generation from the new plant is projected for the mid-2030s, coinciding with the need for high-temperature heat to bolster heavy industries in the nearby Teesside region.

In addition to the JDA, Centrica and X Energy are actively seeking further equity partners and collaborating with top global engineering and construction firms to establish a UK-based development entity for this and future projects. The economic implications of this partnership are profound, with Centrica estimating a potential lifetime value exceeding $12 billion—an early step in a larger transatlantic alliance that could mobilize upwards of $40 billion.

Centrica's CEO, Chris O'Shea, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, highlighting its potential to deliver scalable and secure nuclear technology vital for a sustainable energy landscape. The XE 100 fleet is positioned to enhance energy resilience, supporting national security and affordability.

UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, lauded this partnership as a transformative collaboration, showcasing the benefits of US-UK business alliances in this new nuclear era. He noted that the initiative could provide clean, domestically sourced energy, create skilled jobs, and help stabilize energy costs.

The XE 100, a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor utilizing TRISO-X fuel, is already under development in the US, with commercial units being established in collaboration with notable companies. Centrica's recent acquisition of a 15% stake in the Sizewell C nuclear power station further underscores its commitment to advancing nuclear energy, alongside significant stakes in other operational facilities. The outlook for UK nuclear energy remains positive, with extensions for existing plants indicating a strategic push towards a sustainable energy future.
