CEZ and Rolls-Royce Initiate Early Works for First Czech SMR Project
CEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR have launched preparatory development for the Czech Republic's first small modular reactor, with a target completion in the late 2030s. This partnership marks a significant step in Central Europe's strategy for nuclear expansion through modular technology.

CEZ and Rolls-Royce SMR signed an Early Works Contract on April 24, 2026, to initiate preparatory work for the first small modular reactor (SMR) at the Temelin site. The first unit is expected to be completed in the second half of the 2030s, aligning with broader European timelines for similar projects.
The design utilizes a pressurized water reactor with a capacity of approximately 470 MW, enough to supply power to around one million homes for up to 60 years. CEZ aims to secure necessary permits and regulatory approvals in this early phase and is targeting up to 3 GW of SMR capacity by 2050.
The collaboration supports a wider European shift towards nuclear options that complement renewable energy sources. However, the regulatory pathway remains complex and could impact the timeline.
