Charleston Advances Battery Extension Project for Flood Protection
The City of Charleston is advancing the Battery Extension project, initiated to enhance flood protection on the peninsula and authorized by Congress in 2018. Currently in the preconstruction phase, the project targets flooding and rising sea levels, which are projected to increase by 14 inches over the next 25 years. Community engagement workshops are planned for spring or summer 2024 to gather public input.

The City of Charleston is progressing with the Battery Extension project to combat flooding on the peninsula. This project, authorized by Congress in 2018 for analysis by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, aims to enhance coastal storm risk management.
Currently in the preconstruction phase, the project will focus on the western and eastern sides of the peninsula. It addresses flooding and sea level rise, projecting 14 inches over the next 25 years. Public engagement workshops are expected in spring or summer 2024 for community input.
