Charleston County Landfill Expansion to Increase Capacity by 3 Million Tons
Charleston County plans a $19 million project to quadruple landfill capacity at Bees Ferry, extending its operational lifespan. The project will allow for 20 years of additional waste disposal, addressing ongoing capacity challenges and reliance on a single landfill site.

Charleston County is set to initiate a nearly $19 million project at Bees Ferry Landfill to increase its capacity by 3 million tons, extending operational years by approximately 20 years. Currently, the landfill receives about 200,000 tons of waste annually, with only one million tons of capacity remaining, equating to five years of usage.
The contract for the expansion is anticipated to be awarded to Green Wave Contracting Inc. The county is exploring advanced waste management technologies, including robotics and AI, to improve sorting processes and reduce landfill dependency. Challenges remain with recycling contamination, which complicates waste management efforts.
