Chemelot's Hydrogen Strategy Faces Infrastructure Challenges by 2033
Chemelot is pushing for enhanced hydrogen production infrastructure to meet rising demand by 2035. The facility's reliance on gray hydrogen and the need for renewable alternatives underscores the urgency for investment and strategic partnerships in hydrogen technology.

Chemelot anticipates a necessity for 600 MW of electrolysis capacity by 2030, increasing to 1-1.5 GW by 2035. The connection to the national hydrogen network managed by Hynetwork is projected for 2033, which Chemelot considers too late for its sustainability goals.
Current local hydrogen production exists, but broader project volumes depend on this national connection. Uncertainties in the industry and geopolitical factors hinder investment commitments for renewable hydrogen production.
Hynetwork's infrastructure aims to mitigate risks in circular hydrogen production, vital for the site’s sustainability efforts. A commitment to blue hydrogen production is seen as a necessary interim solution.
