Chennai Explores Abandoned Quarries for Water Resource Augmentation
Researchers from IIT Madras are examining 25 abandoned quarries in Chennai to enhance water supply amid declining reservoir levels. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to mitigate water shortages, particularly in anticipation of poor monsoon conditions.

A study led by IIT Madras aims to evaluate the potential of 25 abandoned quarries in Chennai's southern areas, including Tambaram and Vandalur, to serve as alternative water sources. The project, funded by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, focuses on the storage capacity and water quality of these quarries, which could reduce evaporation losses compared to larger reservoirs.
Currently, Chennai’s major reservoirs are at 47% capacity, and an increased inflow of Krishna water is expected to aid storage. The initiative is critical as Metrowater plans to utilize these quarries only if the Chembarambakkam reservoir fails or if monsoon conditions are poor, with the Sikkarayapuram and Erumaiyur quarries currently 75% full.
