Chilean KC-135 Tanker Supports USAF F-35A Operations Ahead of FIDAE 2026
A Chilean KC-135E successfully refueled two U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning IIs for the first time on April 5, 2026. This operation highlights the strong military ties between Chile and the U.S., reinforcing strategic partnerships in the region.

On April 5, 2026, a Chilean KC-135E tanker refueled two U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning IIs en route to the FIDAE 2026 defense exhibition in Santiago, scheduled for April 7-12. This marks a significant demonstration of military interoperability and readiness between Chile and the United States.
The F-35s previously received support from a KC-135R out of MacDill AFB, Florida, before the Chilean aircraft took over. Chile operates three KC-135Es, acquired from the U.S. Air Force, and uses them to support its fleet of 46 F-16s.
Additionally, a $177 million contract awarded in November 2023 will upgrade 36 F-16s, ensuring operational relevance into the 2040s. This collaboration is part of broader U.S. efforts to maintain influence in Latin America amidst evolving regional dynamics.
