China Achieves Breakthrough in Railgun Technology, Challenging Global Defense Standards
China has demonstrated a significant advancement in electromagnetic railgun technology with a precision-guided projectile. This development enhances China's naval capabilities and poses potential strategic challenges for defense organizations like DRDO.

China has successfully integrated guidance systems into railgun projectiles, enabling precision targeting for naval applications. The new capability allows for self-steering projectiles, enhancing anti-shipping and surface-attack operations.
Railguns can potentially accelerate projectiles to speeds exceeding 10 km/s, far surpassing conventional artillery. Notably, a Chinese projectile survived extreme conditions of 20,000 g and a 7-tesla magnetic pulse during testing, showcasing advancements in guidance technology.
Meanwhile, DRDO has developed an electromagnetic railgun capable of Mach 6, with ongoing work on a larger caliber. The challenges of rail erosion and guidance survivability remain critical for the future of railgun technology globally.
