China Begins Construction of Nine Nuclear Reactors; Global Nuclear Energy Trends in 2025

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

In 2025, China initiated the construction of nine nuclear reactors, including the Taipingling 3 block. Europe's energy sector faces instability due to ideological policies favoring intermittent renewable sources, leading to blackouts in Spain and other regions.

Countries using a mix of nuclear and renewable energy, like France and Sweden, maintain stability, while those relying solely on renewables, such as Germany, experience significant instability. The demand for nuclear energy is growing globally, with the World Bank lifting its long-standing ban on financing nuclear projects.

During 2025, five nuclear reactors were decommissioned, including Belgium's Doel 1 and Canada's Pickering 4, while only two new reactors were brought online: Rajasthan 7 in India and Hualong One in China. The total nuclear electricity production in 2024 reached 2,667 TWh, surpassing the previous year. The Czech Republic increased its nuclear output to nearly 44%, while the UK selected Rolls-Royce SMR as a key supplier for small modular reactors.
