China Implements Battery Tracking System to Combat Black Market
China has launched a comprehensive battery tracking platform effective April 1, 2026, aiming to regulate electric vehicle battery lifecycle. The initiative is designed to eliminate black market activities and ensure environmental compliance in battery disposal and recycling.

As of April 1, 2026, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China has introduced a new national battery tracking platform requiring all stakeholders to report data in real-time. Each battery will receive a unique digital identity from production through end-of-life, facilitating traceability and preventing unauthorized disposal.
This system aims to eradicate informal channels that previously handled battery recycling without environmental consideration. Furthermore, regulations will soon require manufacturers to disclose the complete environmental impact of their products, reinforcing accountability in the supply chain. Companies failing to comply will face immediate sanctions, ensuring a more transparent automotive market.
