China Launches QC-Max LNG Carrier Project to Boost Shipbuilding Sector
The construction of a new 271,000-cubic-metre LNG carrier in China signifies an important development in high-end shipbuilding. This initiative is set to enhance China’s position in the global LNG transportation market and reflects technological advancements in the industry.

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding has initiated the construction of a 271,000-cubic-metre LNG carrier, with delivery slated for 2028. This QC-Max class vessel will transport 57% more LNG than conventional models, utilizing an advanced membrane containment system and a dual-fuel propulsion system that meets Tier III emissions standards.
The shipbuilder has secured orders for 36 vessels in total, including 24 QC-Max carriers, as part of a major LNG project in Qatar. Currently, Hudong-Zhonghua holds nearly 60 LNG carrier orders, the largest backlog by cargo volume globally, with deliveries expected through 2030. China's LNG carrier construction market share has surpassed 30%, driven by technological improvements and increased shipyard capacity.
