China's Naval Expansion: New Supercarrier Fujian and Future Fleet Developments
The Chinese Navy aims to operate nine aircraft carriers by 2035, with the Type 003 Fujian enhancing its naval capabilities significantly. This modernization could challenge US naval dominance in the Pacific, providing China with a formidable carrier strike group capable of projecting power globally.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is advancing towards a fleet of nine aircraft carriers, with the Type 003 Fujian being its first supercarrier featuring CATOBAR capabilities, allowing for an air group of up to 75 aircraft. The PLAN's strategy aims to maintain three carrier strike groups (CSGs) at sea simultaneously, enhancing its ability to contest US naval power in the Pacific.
The introduction of the Fujian represents a significant shift in naval architecture, with electromagnetic catapults allowing greater payloads and operational flexibility compared to ski-jump carriers like the Liaoning and Shandong. This capability facilitates simultaneous launch and recovery, enhancing operational tempo. A potential fleet of Type 004 nuclear-powered carriers would further extend China's reach and deterrence capabilities, posing a strategic challenge to US interests in the region.
