China's Navy (PLAN) Fleet Expansion and Modernization: 2026 Projections and Future Directions
Over the past five years, the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has significantly expanded its fleet capabilities. Currently, it operates eight 055 destroyers and six more in post-launch, along with 25-30 052D destroyers.
The fleet also includes three aircraft carriers: Liaoning, Shandong, and Fujian, the latter commissioned in late 2025. Submarine estimates suggest 50-60 diesel-electric submarines and 6-10 nuclear attack submarines are in service.
The PLAN's shipbuilding capacity remains a topic of debate, with China's capacity being touted as significantly larger than that of the U.S. However, actual naval deliverables are constrained by various factors. Looking ahead, the PLAN is expected to modernize its fleet through advancements in surface combatants, submarines, and naval aviation, while addressing gaps in undersea warfare and strategic systems.
