China's PLAN Develops AI-Enabled Naval Mines in Paracel Islands for Subsea A2/AD Operations
PLAN military oceanographers have identified the Paracel Islands as strategic for deploying AI-intelligentized seabed mines to enhance anti-access capabilities. These mines could exploit acoustic shadow zones to disrupt submarine operations. The U.S. continues Freedom of Navigation Operations in the area amid China's militarization efforts, which includes establishing multiple installations. The PLAN's naval mine inventory exceeds 50,000, evolving towards AI-targeted systems to limit U.S. naval maneuverability and enhance situational awareness.

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is exploring the use of AI-enabled seabed mines in the Paracel Islands to create an anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) zone. These mines could operate within acoustically complex environments, enhancing China's naval warfare capabilities.
The U.S. relies on the Paracel Islands for intelligence operations and conducts Freedom of Navigation Operations in response to China's claims. The PLAN has militarized the area, with over 20 installations reported.
With an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 naval mines, PLAN is developing AI systems for selective vessel engagement. Such advancements could significantly restrict U.S. naval operations and situational awareness in the region.
