China's Submarine Fleet to Expand to 80 by 2035 with Increased Nuclear Capabilities
China's People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is projected to expand its submarine fleet to about 80 submarines by 2035, with nearly half expected to be nuclear-powered. This shift, driven by significant investments in shipyards and infrastructure, indicates a strategic transition from predominantly diesel-electric vessels to an all-nuclear construction focus. Notable submarines in development include the Type 095 guided-missile and Type 096 ballistic missile submarines. Enhanced undersea surveillance capabilities are also being developed to monitor foreign submarine movements.

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is expected to increase its submarine fleet to approximately 80 by 2035, with half being nuclear-powered. A strategic shift towards all-nuclear construction is underway, supported by expanded investments at shipyards and construction of new vessels.
Currently, of over 60 submarines, 14 are nuclear-powered. The PLAN is developing the Type 095 and Type 096 submarines, which will incorporate advanced technologies. Additionally, a robust undersea surveillance network is being established to monitor submarine movements in critical waterways. These developments aim to enhance China's naval reach beyond the First Island Chain.
