Chipotle Clarifies No Affiliation with Bill Ackman Amid Boycott Calls Over ICE Donation
Chipotle clarified that investor Bill Ackman has no affiliation with the company amid calls for a boycott over his donation to a legal defense fund for an ICE agent involved in a fatal shooting. Ackman, who previously held a stake in Chipotle, stated that his donation was aimed at ensuring fair legal representation, not as a political statement. The incident has ignited protests in Minneapolis, with the Department of Homeland Security asserting the agent acted in self-defense.

Chipotle stated that Bill Ackman is not affiliated with the company following a viral post claiming he owned the chain and calling for a boycott due to his donation to a legal defense fund for an ICE agent involved in a fatal shooting in Minneapolis. Ackman's hedge fund, Pershing Square Capital Management, held a 9.9% stake in Chipotle until late 2024.
Ackman confirmed the donation, explaining it was motivated by a commitment to providing legal defense to accused individuals, not as a political statement. He recounted his past scrutiny following challenges to MBIA's finances, which led to an SEC investigation that concluded without charges.
Ackman emphasized the importance of fair legal representation, citing his support for the Innocence Project and funding legal costs for other accused individuals. The DHS has stated that the ICE agent involved acted in self-defense, while the incident has sparked protests in Minneapolis.
