Chulaimbo Sub-County Hospital Implements Solar Power, Aims for KSh 200,000 Monthly Savings
Chulaimbo Sub-County Hospital has shifted to solar energy, forecasting a monthly savings of KSh 200,000. This transition enhances operational reliability and reduces dependency on the often-unreliable Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC).

Chulaimbo Sub-County Hospital has installed a 90kW solar power system, supported by a 320kWh lithium battery bank, to ensure consistent power for its critical services. The project, funded through a grant from EDP Foundation, was executed by PV Tech East Africa.
It marks a significant shift for a government hospital in the Nyanza region and is expected to save at least KSh 200,000 monthly. Local community engagement preceded the installation, employing eight workers and training three in PV technology.
The initiative aims to improve patient care and educational experiences for interns and medical students. Other institutions, like Kabarak University, are also transitioning to solar, highlighting a broader trend in renewable energy adoption in Kenya.
