Civil Society Organizations Urge EU to Prioritize Electricity Grids Over Hydrogen and Gas Pipelines
Seventy civil society organizations have called on Members of the European Parliament to prioritize electricity grids in the EU's energy infrastructure plan, warning against the inclusion of hydrogen and fossil gas pipelines. They argue that the proposed projects risk reinforcing dependence on fossil fuels and diverting funds from necessary electrification efforts. The letter highlights concerns about the environmental impacts of major hydrogen corridors and the influence of the gas lobby in project selection, urging a focus on sustainable energy solutions.

Seventy civil society organizations have urged Members of the European Parliament to prioritize electricity grids in the EU's Trans-European Network - Energy (TEN-E) Regulation, rather than supporting over 100 hydrogen infrastructure projects, primarily pipelines, and two controversial fossil gas pipelines costing over EUR 80 billion. The signatories question the feasibility of these hydrogen projects and their potential to perpetuate dependence on fossil fuels.
They express concerns about environmental impacts and the influence of the gas lobby on project selection. The letter warns against relying on imported renewable hydrogen and calls for a shift towards electrification to enhance energy sovereignty.
