Climate Advocacy Targets Insurance for Hydrocarbon Expansion in Southeast Asia
Climate advocacy groups are pushing insurers to cease support for oil and gas projects in Southeast Asia, specifically Indonesia and the Philippines. This move aims to mitigate climate change and reduce financial risks associated with these initiatives.

Approximately 70 climate advocacy organizations have urged major insurers and reinsurers to deny coverage and investment for oil and gas expansion projects in Indonesia and the Philippines. These projects are viewed as detrimental to climate goals and pose financial risks to insurers due to potential backlash and ecological impacts.
While Southeast Asian nations are increasing energy supply to satisfy their growing populations, they are simultaneously evaluating the expansion of hydrocarbon production and the development of infrastructure to import liquefied natural gas. The situation presents a conflict between rapid energy demands and climate commitments, possibly leading to increased scrutiny on insurance practices in the sector.
