Closure of Devonport Army Barracks and Cadet Facilities Planned Amid Defense Restructuring
The Devonport army barracks is scheduled for closure as the Defence Department recommends selling or terminating leases on 68 properties, including 15 in Tasmania. The 44 Transport Squadron, traditionally based in Devonport, may relocate to a new multi-user facility in Launceston or another facility in the region.
The Burnie training depot is also included in the closures. Cadet facilities in Devonport and Burnie will be shut down, with operations shifting to community venues. Local leaders, including Senator Richard Colbeck and RSL president Shona Kuipers, have voiced concerns about the implications for military presence and community ties. The Tasmanian government will seek to address these issues with the federal government.
