Coast Guard to Enforce Closure of Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal for Electric Fish Barrier Testing

The Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal will be temporarily closed by the Coast Guard for electric fish barrier testing conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The closure will take place from February 7 to February 22, 2026, between mile markers 295.5 and 297.5.
Testing will occur in two phases: from February 7 to February 13 for field mapping and touch potential testing, and from February 14 to February 22 for barge testing and further touch potential testing. A safety zone will be established daily from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
CST and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. CST.
