Cockerill to Supply 30 Turrets for Ukraine's Leopard 1 Tanks
Cockerill Defense is set to deliver 30 Cockerill 3105 turrets to modernize Ukraine's Leopard 1 tanks, with the first units expected in June 2027. This upgrade aims to enhance the operational capabilities of these aging platforms by integrating unmanned turret technology and a high-pressure 105 mm gun.

Cockerill Defense has reportedly secured a contract to provide 30 Cockerill 3105 turrets for Ukraine's Leopard 1 main battle tanks, with initial deliveries anticipated in June 2027. This initiative will modernize the Leopard 1, which first entered service in 1965, equipping it with an unmanned turret and a 105 mm high-pressure gun compatible with NATO ammunition.
The turret provides STANAG 4569 Level 4 protection, allowing it to withstand 14.5 mm armor-piercing rounds. The unmanned design increases crew survivability by allowing operation from within the vehicle's hull.
Testing of a prototype in Ukraine has reportedly been successful, providing valuable real-world data that could enhance the turret's appeal to other international buyers, particularly in a market increasingly focused on modern battlefield requirements. The unknown funding source for the contract may impact the timeline and implementation of the upgrades.
