Codelco's December Copper Output Overstated by 20,000 Tonnes, Audit Reveals
Codelco may have inflated its December 2025 copper output by 20,000 tonnes due to misclassified materials. This discrepancy raises significant concerns about the company’s operational control and governance amidst scrutiny from the Chilean government.
A preliminary audit suggests Codelco overstated its December 2025 copper production by approximately 20,000 tonnes, impacting its reported total of 172,300 tonnes. This figure, while the highest for the decade, raised alarms when January output was recorded at only 91,000 tonnes, a 47% decrease.
The audit indicated that a senior executive may have authorized the inclusion of materials not meeting production standards. Concerns are heightened as Codelco targets an annual output of 1.7 million tonnes by 2030, facing challenges from aging mines.
The credibility of Codelco and the Chilean mining sector may be at risk, particularly if the questionable outputs influence internal targets or executive compensation. Analysts noted that while the operational impact may be limited, the reputational damage could be significant.
