Cold Room and Solar Power Enhance Food Production in Phalaborwa
The installation of a cold room and solar power systems in Phalaborwa significantly improves local food distribution for farmers. This initiative, backed by multiple organizations, aims to reduce waste and enhance market access for growers in a challenging agricultural environment.

In Phalaborwa, the African Conservation Trust (ACT) has established a cold room and solar power systems at Gingirikani and Rixaka cooperatives, allowing farmers to harvest over several days instead of selling immediately. The cooperatives now farm five hectares, utilizing a solar-powered borehole pump, drip irrigation, and a refrigerated vehicle to transport produce to larger markets, including Johannesburg.
Challenges faced by local farmers include drought, land degradation, and competition from wildlife, necessitating innovative deterrents. Community volunteers, supported through the Social Employment Fund, contribute to local food security and economic improvement. The initiative fosters resilience and market access for small-scale farmers.
