Commissioner Kubilius Engages in European Defence and Space Policy Discussions in Portugal
Commissioner Kubilius met with Portugal's Defence Minister Nuno Melo in Porto to discuss European Defence Readiness, SAFE implementation, and support for Ukraine, participating in the Diplomatic Seminar 2026 alongside NATO officials. His visit included discussions on space policy with Minister Fernando Alexandre and a roundtable with defence and space stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among Member States to enhance Europe's defence capabilities.

On January 7, Commissioner Kubilius met with Portugal's Defence Minister Nuno Melo in Porto to discuss European Defence Readiness, SAFE implementation, and support for Ukraine. He participated in the Diplomatic Seminar 2026, addressing Portuguese ambassadors alongside Minister Melo and NATO Deputy Secretary-General Radmila Shekerinska.
Later, he visited the Engineering Development Centre, CEiiA, known for R&D in aeronautics, mobility, and space. On January 8, Kubilius continued in Lisbon, visiting the Portuguese Air Force and hearing from Parliament Committees on European Affairs and Defence.
He met with Minister Fernando Alexandre to discuss space policy and held a roundtable with defence and space stakeholders. His final engagement was a Youth Dialogue at Tecnico, addressing challenges and opportunities in European space and defence. Efforts to strengthen Europe's defence capabilities will involve collaboration among Member States and sectors.
