Community Leaders Back Proposed Deepwater Port Project in Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut

DEFENSE

A deepwater port project in Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut, has gained support from local leaders, including the hamlet and the hunters and trappers organization. The port aims to enhance marine safety, search and rescue, and support defense operations.

The first phase is projected to cost $350 million, with a request for $150 million in federal funding to expedite development. Construction is anticipated to start this year, with the goal of completing phase one by 2028.

The port, located on Baffin Island near Greenland, is also promoted as a means to foster economic growth through tourism and fishing. The initial phase includes a 10-meter deep port for various vessels, while phase two would deepen it further for larger navy ships.
