Completion of Pilot Operation for Accident-Tolerant Fuel at Rostov Nuclear Power Plant
The pilot operation of accident-tolerant fuel at Rostov Nuclear Power Plant's unit 2 has been completed after 18 months. The program involved three fuel campaigns using experimental fuel assemblies designed for VVER-1000 reactors. The new fuel technology enhances safety by maintaining integrity in the event of coolant loss. Rosatom plans to prepare documentation for regulatory approval and conduct post-irradiation studies. The next phase involves loading fuel assemblies with 312 new fuel elements, utilizing a production site for chromium coatings.

The 18-month pilot operation of accident-tolerant fuel at Rostov Nuclear Power Plant's unit 2 has been completed, marking the conclusion of three fuel campaigns for VVER-1000 reactors. The experimental fuel assemblies incorporated new materials and designs aimed at enhancing safety during coolant loss events.
Rosatom intends to submit documentation to Rostekhnadzor for regulatory approval before transferring the fuel for post-irradiation studies. Future steps include loading assemblies with 312 new fuel elements, with a dedicated production site established for applying chromium coatings at the Chepetsky Mechanical Plant.
