Congress Allocates $15.7 Billion in Earmarks, Boosting Research Funding for Kentucky Universities
Lawmakers have earmarked $15.7 billion for various projects in the current fiscal year, an increase from $14.3 billion in 2024. This includes significant funding for research at Kentucky's University of Louisville (UL) and University of Kentucky (UK), largely facilitated by Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who secured $715 million for approximately 60 projects in the state.
UL received $100 million for research-related earmarks, while UK received $65 million for a construction project tied to a health initiative. UL's funding aims to enhance its Department of Defense research capabilities.
Other senators, including Susan Collins (R-ME) and Patty Murray (D-WA), have also secured earmarks for their states' universities. With ongoing congressional support, research earmarks are expected to remain substantial in the upcoming fiscal year's budget discussions.
