Connecticut Siting Council Approves Fencing for Bridgeport Fuel Cell Plant
The Connecticut Siting Council has approved the installation of an anti-climb chain link fence for the $80 million fuel cell plant in Bridgeport, CT. The 9.66-megawatt facility will provide power to the United Illuminating grid and has faced criticism regarding its size and aesthetics. The request was approved on January 30, with additional details required in a development plan approved in May 2025. The plant is expected to supply electricity to 10,000 households and heat to local institutions.

The Connecticut Siting Council approved the installation of an anti-climb chain link fence along the south side of the $80 million Bridgeport fuel cell plant on January 30. The 9.66-megawatt facility, developed by Charter Oak Borrower LLC, will connect to United Illuminating's power grid.
The Council's earlier approval on October 8, 2021, required a development plan, which was submitted in March 2025 and approved in May 2025. NuPower LLC collaborated with the City of Bridgeport for the project, utilizing HyAxiom fuel cells. The plant is projected to provide electricity for 10,000 households and heat for local schools once operational.
