Conroe City Council Approves Up to $400K for Legal Defense in Two Lawsuits

DEFENSE

On January 8, the Conroe City Council approved up to $400,000 in legal spending for two lawsuits. The first lawsuit, John Sellars v. Duke W.

Coon and the city of Conroe, challenges the results of a November 4 charter amendment election, with an additional $150,000 authorized for legal defense. This follows a previous approval of $150,000 in December.

Public comments reflected resident concerns over the expenditure, emphasizing the need to respect voter decisions. Council member Marsha Porter highlighted the election's high turnout and the importance of defending voter choices.

The second approved expenditure of up to $250,000 pertains to the Conroe Professional Fire Fighters Association v. City of Conroe, Texas, and Sami Quinlan, alleging the city improperly rejected a petition for a May 2026 election on collective bargaining. The first hearing for this case is scheduled for January 9.
