The Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability and the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) will allocate $1.24 million to support 12 collaborative projects focused on key environmental challenges. This funding is aimed at improving urban air quality, protecting ocean ecosystems, and developing recycling strategies for electric vehicle batteries.
The projects will incorporate new grant categories for time-sensitive policy engagement and scientific advocacy. Notable efforts include the use of AI for pollution modeling in urban communities and research on mesopelagic species for biodiversity conservation.
Additionally, a new recycling plant in Pforzheim aims to recover rare earth metals, crucial for various technologies, reducing reliance on imports. The initiatives reflect a broader commitment to sustainable practices and environmental equity.
