Croatian Air Force to Fully Control Airspace with Rafale Jets from January 1, 2026

DEFENSE

Starting January 1, 2026, the Croatian Air Force will assume full responsibility for national airspace defense, utilizing a squadron of 12 Rafale fighter jets. Croatian pilots have completed training to operate these advanced aircraft, which will execute air-policing duties within NATO's integrated air and missile defense system.

Previously, airspace protection was provided by Italian and Hungarian aircraft. The Rafale jets will be supported by modern radar networks and the Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial system. Additionally, Croatia has signed a €125 million contract to develop counter-drone systems, enhancing protection for key infrastructure, including Zagreb and Zadar airports. The project will include both stationary and mobile solutions, with the Croatian company Končar leading the development efforts.
