Croatian Air Force to Fully Control Airspace with Rafale Jets from January 1, 2026
Starting January 1, 2026, the Croatian Air Force will take full control of national airspace defense with a squadron of 12 Rafale fighter jets, following the completion of pilot training. This transition, previously managed by Italian and Hungarian aircraft, will be supported by modern radar networks and the Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial system, alongside a €125 million investment in counter-drone systems to protect key infrastructure. The Croatian company Končar will lead the development of these new defense capabilities.

Starting January 1, 2026, the Croatian Air Force will assume full responsibility for national airspace defense, utilizing a squadron of 12 Rafale fighter jets. Croatian pilots have completed training to operate these advanced aircraft, which will execute air-policing duties within NATO's integrated air and missile defense system.
Previously, airspace protection was provided by Italian and Hungarian aircraft. The Rafale jets will be supported by modern radar networks and the Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial system. Additionally, Croatia has signed a €125 million contract to develop counter-drone systems, enhancing protection for key infrastructure, including Zagreb and Zadar airports. The project will include both stationary and mobile solutions, with the Croatian company Končar leading the development efforts.
