CSIR Clarifies Ratel Modernisation Study as Research Initiative, Not Procurement
The CSIR has clarified that its recent Request for Information (RFI) regarding the modernization of the South African Army's Ratel infantry fighting vehicles is a research initiative rather than a procurement requirement. Tasked by the Defence Materiel Division, the CSIR's assessment of life extension options aims to inform future needs without committing to any purchases. Meanwhile, the SANDF is exploring alternatives as the Project Hoefyster to replace the Ratels may be shelved, with local companies like OTT Solutions developing upgrade solutions.

The CSIR's RFI in July 2025 for extending the South African Army's Ratel infantry fighting vehicles is a research initiative, not a SANDF requirement. The CSIR was tasked by the Defence Materiel Division to assess life extension options.
The RFI closed on 11 August and invited bidders for modernisation solutions. Findings will inform potential future requirements but do not imply a procurement commitment. Project Hoefyster to replace Ratels may be shelved, prompting the SANDF to explore alternatives, with local companies developing upgrade solutions like OTT Solutions' Ratel SLEP.
